  • Comments Off on Sage’s Rage: I luv Doc McStuffins

when i was a little girl my favorite toy in the world was my cousin annie! she was a little rag doll that i loved to play with.

kids love toys and use them as a way to practice being ‘adults’. it’s great for their imagination, speaking and social skills but it’s also a wonderful way for them to practice thinking BiG.

Doc_McStuffins 12-12that’s why i luv the new Disney show Doc McStuffins, which is a about a 6 year old girl,  Dottie McStuffins, who wants to become a doctor like her mom.  so she practices healing with her toys.    the show comes on Disney and was renewed for a second season which will air next Spring!

wouldn’t DR. MS be a wonderful christmas gift for a little girl or boy to receive.  such a great role model to play with!

speaking of role model’s…

I’m giving a huge shout out to one of my favorite real life docs! Dr. Jeri Dyson who is going to appear on BET 106 & park for the World AIDS Day special!! Check her out Tonight 7pm (EST)

today i’ve been reading a lot of emails, twitter posts and fb messages about Thanksgiving. it’s that time of the year that we set aside to think about gratitude.  this year i’m switching it up and saying thanks but no thanks to a few things…

1- no thank you to putting up holiday lights until everyone who was impacted by super storm sandy gets their power back.  how insane do i look using all that extra energy when there are still people in NYC who can’t take a warm shower, read a good book at night or charge their cell phones in the convenience of their own homes because they still don’t have electricity!

2- no way, jose to the black friday sales that have crept into thursday! my disdain for this madness all started with those long lines at midnight, followed by the crazy stampedes when they open the doors. but when i saw a commercial this week for sales on thursday afternoon i just shut it down. i am not interested in tossing away family values, time to give back to the community and an extra slice of pecan pie in exchange for maxing out my mastercard at the mall!

3- talk to the hand if you’re using thanksgiving as the one and only time to count your blessings. this year has been such a life altering experience, as i’m going through an internal growth process that is teaching me how much more i have to learn about life. one thing i’m finally starting to understand is the importance of giving thanks every single day! through the good and the not so good looking days and so should you.

thanksgiving is not just a holiday; it’s a way of life! what you do on this day, should be done everyday (except that extra plate of mac and cheese!)

  • Comments Off on Sage’s Rage: Black Girls Rock! towards your dreams…

I just got home from speaking to students at IS285 in Brooklyn.  What an amazing group of 7th and 8th graders.  They really inspired me to continue to strive for the highest goals I can attain.  They had big dreams and so many of them were working really hard to get there.  One of them asked me what made me realize I wanted to work with teens.

I  had to think back to my dreams as a young sage and the answer is…teens energize me.  But they also are the next generation; our soon to be future. They are idealistic and innovative, just what our society needs to move forward. I saw that and much more from speaking with this group.  I can’t wait to see Ms. Michael Jackson rock the stage in the next 10 years.  And I know that my ‘shy’ girl will make it to her goal of being an Obstetrician, as long as she continues to focus on getting good grades and blocking those haters out of her mind.

All of our talk got me so hyped up, I had to go home and rewatch the Black Girls Rock! awards which aired on BET November 4th.   I’m listening right now as Taraji P. Henson introduces BGR! awardee Susan L. Taylor, former editor of Essence magazine and Founder of the  National Cares Mentoring Movement.   Ms. Taylor recognizes the important role that youth play in shaping our future.  Investing in them is investing in us.

So students of IS285 if you are reading this, continue to dream but don’t sleep while you’re at it.

Work hard and remember to give back like Susan Taylor and BGR! founder Beverly Bond.

To all teens- I’m thanking you in advance for making our world a better place!

Ladies, make sure to go out and vote today!!!  Let’s not forget that less than 100 years ago we did not have the right to vote!  Women became allowed to vote in the United States in 1920!  So many fought hard for us to participate in our country’s treasured democracy!!
