  • Comments Off on Hot Off The Press: Study Finds 90% increase in ADHD among Black girls

solonge adhd 2-13did you know that singer, model, actress Solange Knowles has ADHD?

according to a recent study she is not alone.  it’s a common misconception that only boys have ADHD.  but the recent study found a 90% increase in ADHD diagnoses among African American girls.

this was very shocking to me and led me to try to find out why.  check out my recent publication about this issue on Thegrio.com.  read the article at the link below:

Thegrio.com, a division of NBC News, is a daily online news site devoted to stories that affect African-American audiences.

valentines day blog 2-13not to rain on everyone’s parade but i really don’t like valentine’s day

it’s soo fake…

i remember when i was in high school i never had a valentine.

i would see everyone walking around with heart shaped balloons, candy and cute teddy bears

and i would have nothing…

so depressing.

years have gone by and i have the love of my life

but still no valentine

why?

because love is so much more than one ‘blown out of proportion’ day

it’s about every day; how you treat one another and how you grow together

i got soo hot about the valentine hype, i wrote my next video blog about it

my three part series on Love & Relationships

Check out the first installment

  • Comments Off on Sage’s Rage: Sisters Please Get HIV Tested

black aids awareness day

Today is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

sometimes i feel like a broken record

each year encouraging our communities to pay attention to HIV/AIDS

each year it seems to get harder to get folks to listen

each year the rates keep rising

for African Americans that is…

especially African American youth

please take the time to think about what you have been doing

better yet think about what your partners could be doing

without your knowledge

get tested for hiv and other sexually transmitted infections

remember the tests do not prevent you from getting something

so you’ve gotta

abstain from sex

that mean NO to all types of sex

or

protect yourself by using condoms

make sure to learn how to use and dispose of one properly

if it sounds like i am preaching that’s because I AM!

we have to keep focused until the number of new infections

get down to ZERO

  • Comments Off on Hot Off The Press: Janisaw Company creates Tool Kit for media advocacy organization

TruthInReality tool kit cover

There has been a lot of discussion about the negative portrayals in the media of women and girls, especially of African Americans.  In particular, reality TV is known for glorifying fighting, bullying and bad behavior.

Janisaw Company was happy to join forces to create a media advocacy tool kit with Truth in Reality, an organization dedicated to challenging the harmful values these shows promote and change the standards of broadcast practices for the reality TV genre.

The free tool kit is designed for concerned individuals and community leaders to take their outrage and put it into positive action. It was recently launched at the NAACP Image awards.
