Last night many of you had a chance to see the premiere of BET Network’s new sitcom ‘Reed between the lines’.  I’ve been hearing mixed reviews in the virtual world.  I don’t understand what the gripes are about…

In my view, the show is well written and the cast is great! But what I really see as the shows’ success is the obvious movement away from cat fighting reality TV and buffoon-like comedies.

It’s a good old fashioned show about a normal loving family. Have we gotten so whacked out Black America that we can’t find joy in watching normalcy on our screens?

I admit I am totally biased as a Psychologist and Professor because I’m just so happy that TV is showing that we actually exist.  There may not be a lot of Black female Psychologists out there but we are here and just as well rounded and quirky as the show’s character Dr. Carla Reed.

Her image on TV may shape the dreams and self image of so many Black girls and that alone is worth us supporting the show.  I’m pretty sure my office will be lined up next semester with college students who want to become just like her. It will certainly be a change from the droves of students who want to be Forensic Psychologists because of CSI (not hating; just saying, really??)…I digress…

I am urging those of you who second guess the show to take the title at face value and recognize the immense worth it may have for our community.  Join those of us who are fans and continue to support the show

I’m a little late to comment on the final episode of my now favorite reality TV show, Laurieann Gibson’s Born to Dance.   Some of you know that I am a little biased in that I was given the gift to dance and did for many years.  But I can honestly say it was NOT nostalgia that gives this show a huge thumbs up for me.   It is by far the most inspiring and positive image  on TV I have seen lately of young women and their pursuit of success.   I must admit I didn’t want to give Laurieann a chance given the way she was portrayed on Making the Band.  But for the first episode I decided to use the 10min rule and by minute five I was hooked.

Each week she worked with the girls to bring out their inner strength, she did not sugarcoat how hard it is to achieve one’s dreams and she created a supportive environment for the girls to lean on each other.   Most of all, she has called me and so many other viewers to push harder to birthing as many of  our dreams as our souls can imagine…I cannot wait to see what season two will inspire us to do.
