  • Comments Off on Sage’s Rage: Barneys, Smarneys; leave Jay Z alone

ishopjay z is starting a line at barneys; the place where a young black male is suing them for falsely accusing him of stealing by assuming he couldn’t afford to buy an item in the store.  hov is a business man, why should he get involved?

oprah couldn’t by a bag at hermes.  AND what?  i’m pretty sure she has much bigger fish to fry…

is it cool to treat someone horribly at your store because of their race, gender or sexual orientation. NO

but let’s get real. all this fuss is much deeper than folks are trying to front.   think about it. when was the last time we had boycotts because someone got kicked out of a 99 cent store…

the outrage is that barneys and hermes are supposed to be the IT stores. the place where the ‘fabulous’ get their toys.   so by treating a black person badly at those stores, they are indirectly saying that they are not worthy of fabulousity too.  so people are mad…

but i say so what.

forget barneys.  why get your self-worth from a store selling a bunch of stuff.   people get discriminated all the time.  it’s not a good thing but it is a fact.  the anger needs to be directed at why in 2013 we still have discrimination and negative stereotypes.

the outrage should be that there is still a belief that certain people are not good enough.  but until we focus on that, to me this is but a silly scuffle over nothing.   a rag over who has the right to wear the best designer clothes is not the fight i’m checking to be a part of…

one of my favorite quotes is by ethel watts mumford

“the greatest possession is self possession”

stay focused ladies! you look good in that dress regardless of where it came from

hip hop is NOT the great redeemer that all these folks are trying to make it out to be.  there i said it!

that’s coming from an original hip hop head who fell in luv with the genre as soon as my ear buds could appreciate music…

i had high hopes for hip hop and still do.  especially when you see how its powerful force has manifested empires in so many facets of global society. it is a voice and i’m a firm believer in speech as a form of true freedom.  but i draw the line in making hip hop into a ‘Savior’.

this week i happened upon a Huff Post article about hip hop as the new spirituality for youth.  the author, Dr. Monica Miller was wrote a commentary on the jay z/kanye video “no church in the wild” and youth finding meaning through the lyrics of hip hop. she finds that for youth “music (hip hop often cited) provides what churches often can’t”.  she states that jay-Z and kanye should get, “an honorary degree in theology”.  MBA’s yes; MDiv, come on now…why?  are they really saying something that transformational? or are we hooked on the swag that makes hip hop so irresistible…

i’m sticking with the essence of hip hop and speaking truth.   hip hop is the new spirituality (?), sending hate mail to dream hampton cause she tweeted about nas getting a ghostwriter (?), defending to the end like it’s all good with hip hop (?).

if you’re talking about underground hip hop, i agree with you. but if you are referring to the mainstream, fast food version served up for the masses; i pass…glorify not please.   Dr. Miller is correct that many youth are listening to, believing in and living their life for hip hop. but that makes me wanna holla false prophet…

the messages in a lot of the songs, videos and overall vibe of mainstream hip hop is NOT COOL. let’s stop kidding ourselves and recognize that a lot of hip hop has corrupted the minds of many young and not-so young people in ways we should not be praising.   those hooks of get ahead by any means, nothing matters but bling, shaking booty is all that counts is NOT the road map to success.

just when i was ready to put away my b-girl kicks, lupe fiasco premiered his new video ‘b@tch bad’ from his upcoming album Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1.   All I can say is preach Lupe, preach…

  • Comments Off on Hot Off the Press: Isn’t She Lovely- Baby Blue Revealed

today Jay-Z  and Beyonce posted photos of their daughter Baby Blue.

they did so in style with the grand reveal of her very own website

no doubt that site is blowing up right now cause everyone wants a piece of little miss ivy.   some have said all this exposure can’t be good for a child.  but i disagree.

it takes a village to raise a child and if we do it right, millions of us over the next two decades could help bring blue ivy into her own.   sending her love, giving sage (no pun intended) advice, applauding her success and most importantly forgiving the mistakes she is sure to make.

all the hysteria over the carter birth can be refocused to launch a ‘national campaign’ to promote family values, a sense of community and commitment to our children.  the fixation with how cute she is will hopefully allow us to see how adorable all of our youth are.  IF we do it right.

so visit the site, talk all you want, become a fan of B.I. but remember that just like any other kid, a life is at stake and how we act towards her matters…

This past weekend everyone was all buzz about

Jay-Z and Beyonce’s birth of a baby girl, Blue Ivy.

I’m excited for them and can see that with the name they chose they have big plans for lil one

(I say Yale graduate in the making:)

Here’s a repost from my girl Thembisa Mshaka celebrating b.i.’s arrival.

Black Love On Top Pt. II: And Blue Ivy Makes Three

Posted on

Congratulations to the Carters! BeyonJay are the proud parents of a healthy, happy baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter, born Saturday January 7th, 2012 at Lenox Hill Hospital under heavy security, complete with a secret getaway to evade the papps!

I like their steez on this one. Sure, they are both public figures, but this is a very private moment for their family and it is also their to keep private where possible. The two were very generous to reveal the name so soon, and to disclose how Beyoncé delivered her daughter in a joint statement. Honestly, how a woman delivers her child is as personal as it gets. Her birth story is really none of our business.

And who can blame them for choosing to shut us out? The moment the world knew King B was expecting, the hate began on eveything from the baby’s name and likeness to whether there was even a pregnancy at all. New lows for the Internets; thankfully the well wishes are drowning all that out.

Papa Hov released a dedication to the baby entitled “Glory” and it’s sweet and raw as fresh cut sugarcane. Call it our generation’s “Isn’t She Lovely”. I’m willing to bet he’ll still call her Brooklyn Carter…

Here’s to Blue Ivy’s greatness.
