american hero and civil rights leader Dr. Olivia J. Hooker died on november 21st 2018 at 103 years old.  her long and trailblazing life has been written about and honored by many these last few weeks, including receiving her very own google veterans day doodle and a beautiful tribute on nbc today.

Dr. Hooker was a survivor of the infamous tulsa race massacre of 1921, otherwise known as ‘black wall street’.  She was the first african american woman to join the US coast guard in 1945.

she received her phd in psychology at university of rochester at a time when many people of color had limited access to any forms of higher education.  she went on to work with children and served as distinguished professor at fordham university. this is how i learned about her and had the pleasure of meeting her.  Dr. Hooker’s accolades are many.  but what makes her a hero and treasure to america was her boundless heart and honorable character.

she took me in as one of her own.  i have vivid memories of taking the metro north from the bronx where i was a young doctoral student at fordham to white plains.  she would pick me up in her car and we would drive to her house.  she would offer me a home cooked meal and we would laugh the day away.  she drove down to fordham for my doctoral hooding, she cheered me on in completing my post doc, shouted with joy when i got my first job as a professor and we had a huge celebration the two of us when i got tenure!!

she was always encouraging but also clear about the challenges and barriers that lay before me as an african american female psychologist.  often our discussions would revolve about the great needs among youth in our communities.  the strength, energy and most of all passion that is needed to serve.  the importance of love, generosity and optimism.  she taught me that titles, honors and awards are nice if and when they happen. but the true mark of success is making a difference in the life of yourself and others.

i watched with awe as through her 80s, 90s and even into her 100s, she kept serving.  living life fully until the end. it has been a true honor to know such an amazing spirit as my mentor and friend.  the beautiful small service to lay her to rest this past wednesday was so special; just like she was. she will be missed but never forgotten.

  • Comments Off on Crowing a Queen: Mother Teresa #Sainthood

at sassysagesays we often highlight girls/young women who are doing amazing things. this time we are honoring my favorite celebrity of all time, mother teresa of calcutta, peacemaker and advocate for the poor.

you know that question they sometimes use on college essay applications about who alive or dead you would have dinner with?  my answer is always mother teresa. i can barely contain myself i’m soo excited that she is going to become a saint!

the reasons that she more than deserves this honor are countless.  but what i want to highlight is how she chose to follow her heart in dedicating her career to what she was passionate about.   the chances were slim that she would make a difference in the lives of the poor she reached out to. she had no money and at the time very little support for her work. but she kept going. little by little the word spread of this tiny lady who was helping children.  it took years but her strength and determination turned into world wide admiration and followers of her commitment to serve.

as we celebrate labor day, consider if you are walking your path of passion. regardless of your religious affiliation you can look to mother (saint) teresa as a role model to never let your current circumstance determine your goals. take a small step towards your dreams; sainthood could be in your destiny.

i’m at a meeting with some of the most amazing women leaders in the country.  they are rocking my socks off with their brilliance.

i’ve gotten the chance to pick their brains about how they got the idea they could rule. and all of them say the same thing.

they saw someone else and thought i wanna be like that too!

that’s what having sheros can do!

imagine a world where girls had heros that looked like us.

  • Comments Off on Crowing a Queen: Zora Ball 7 yr old app developer

at sassysagesays we often highlight girls/women who are doing amazing things.

this time we are honoring zora ball.  who in the first grade became the youngest person to develop an app.

yes, you heard right. she was just seven years old.  zora had an awesome idea for a mobile game app and put her idea to work.

what are you thinking about that could happen if you worked on it?

737558-antoinette-tuffby now everyone has heard the 911 call of Ms. Antoinette Tuff as she bravely talked a mentally unstable man from murdering hundreds of innocent children.

when i heard the call, i thought this woman sounds like an angel.  i couldn’t believe anyone without training would remain that calm and be SO LOVING.  yesterday i saw her interview on Anderson Cooper 360 and now I am convinced; she IS a walking, breathing example of sainthood.

She is not just a hero to those children and their families; she’s a hero to us all. She’s a hero because of her example of humility by sharing her pain and secrets with not only a stranger but someone who wanted to kill her.   She’s a hero because of her deep faith that everything was going to be okay not just for herself but the man with the gun.   She’s a hero because her focus the entire Anderson Cooper interview was on others.   All of this from a woman who had been through so many trials in her own life. She could have easily been angry at life.   Her strength to turn her life and attitude into positive is purely extraordinary.

Antoinette Tuff is my role model of what a real woman looks like.  Yes she is beautiful on the outside but its’ her character and heart that are stunningly gorgeous.  We salute and thank you Ms.Tuff.
